Sandbox: System Restore Page 1 2 3 4

In previous versions of Windows NT, you would create an Emergency Repair Disk. There was a program called RDISK in a folder on the hard drive. (Technically, RDISK was found in C:\WINNT.)

The purpose of the ERD was to restore enough functionality so that you could return the computer to a bootable state. Say you change the device drivers for your hardware or add new hardware. When you reboot your computer, you get an error message and cannot get to Windows. In reality, recovering a Windows NT system with the RDISK left a lot out. Since it didn’t work well, even the Computer Mama was unfaithful about keeping the ERD up to date.

In Windows XP, there is a better way. Go to Start->All Programs->Accessories->System Tools. Now, click on System Restore.

1. When you get to the Welcome screen you will see two options on the right hand side: Restore my computer to an earlier time and Create a restore point.
