The Windows Updates
When the scan
is complete, you will see a list of recommendations. There are three
categories: Critical, Windows, and Driver Updates.
ALWAYS install the Critical Updates. These are the patches you
need to fill the holes in your security.
The Windows Updates offer improvements to the Media Player, the Instant
Messenger and other Windows components. You can add them if you want.
The Driver Updates take some thought. I usually skip those unless I am
having some trouble. I operate under the theory that if it isn’t broken,
don’t fix it.
With each recommendation, you have the option to Add or Remove the patch
from your list. If you are not certain whether or not you need a certain
recommendation, you can read the Knowledgebase article that is linked to
the patch.

Time and time again, I am surprised
and dismayed to hear people dismiss the Windows Updates as too much
bother. Worse, people tell me that they won’t do the updates because
a “friend of a friend” told them it would trash their machine. Well,
I have installed hundreds of updates. Not once did a Windows Update
ruin a PC.
