Spelling Counts

Type in your first name. Double click to select the word, then Edit ->Copy, Edit ->Paste

Type in your last name. Select the word, Edit->Copy, Edit ->Paste

Now, using drag and drop, make the words go, “First Name, Last Name, First Name, Last Name.”

Do you see a red wavy line under your name? Microsoft Word has an automatic spell checker and it may have noticed that your name is not in the dictionary.

  • Right click your name and review the list of options

  • Select Add to place your name in your dictionary. (Technical term: custom.dic.)

Try this experiment using the following words and sentences:

  • Type "schooool," and correct the spelling using your right mouse click

  • Type "We was going to school." and correct the grammar using your right mouse click

Show/Hide

All word processors are text based. Think of the old-fashioned IBM Electric typewriters. Here is an example:

Try to drag and drop your name to the bottom of the page. How far does it go? Now, place your cursor at the end of the last word on the page and hit the Enter key five or six times. Try to drag your last name to the bottom of the page. Where did it drop, this time?

Look on the Standard Tool bar for the Show/Hide button. When you select Show/Hide, Microsoft Word displays the formatting codes. Notice, each time you hit the Enter key on the keyboard, you have a new blank line. When you are working with Word, the text is anchored to a line, just like a typewriter. If you want your name to be at the bottom of the page, you have to enter enough blank lines to reach the bottom.
