New, Open, Save, and Save As

Save

When you save a file, Word adds “.doc” to the name of your file. This three letter extension tells Windows which program should open your file when you double click it.  Note Word 2000 and Word XP are compatible with Word 97. There is no need to save in a different version.

Open a blank Microsoft Word document

  • Type, "Dr. Green

  • Go to File ->Save

  • Locate the new folder with your name.

  • Name the document: Letter to Dr. Green

  • Click on the Save button or press the Enter key on your keyboard.

Save As

Save As is used to make a copy of your work. It is a fast method of “cloning” a letter, editing a few lines of copy, and completing your work. Save As is also used for making different version of a document.

Now, Open the Letter to Dr. Green

  • Change the text to read, "Dr. Smith"

  • Save As, "Letter to Dr. Smith"

Verify that you have two different letters, one to Dr. Smith and another to Dr. Green.
